Saturday evening highlights the company with the premiere of Sabatino Verlezza’s Winged. This new work supported by The O’Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation and set to original music by long-time collaborator Elliot Sokolov (NYC) Winged explores the individual’s courage and commitment to defy gravity, the odds of success, and the question “flying or falling?”

Joining the company are special guests and friends. Claire Porter (NYC) and Sabatino Verlezza combine their comedic talents in the dance theatre piece See You Around (2008) On Saturday, Porter also presents one of her critically-acclaimed signature solo works. Soprano Marla Berg performs the music of Strauss to accompany Verlezza’s premiere of the third section of his dance, Lasting Songs. Associate Artistic Director, Barbara Allegra Verlezza offers a restaging of her trio, Triptych (2005), with “nothing short of amazing” (The Plain Dealer) guest Allie Friedrich (MO).  Additionally, Allegra Verlezza will present her ensemble work, Broken Voices (2008), following the recent honor of being chosen to represent Kent State University at the Gala Performance of the 2009 North Central Regional American College Dance Festival Association.  Company member Sabatino A. Verlezza premieres Maercs (2009) based on Einstein’s thought, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

On Sunday afternoon, The School of Verlezza Dance and its outreach programs, supported by the professional company and guests, will perform explorations of world rhythms and voices in new works by the faculty, Artistic Director Sabatino Verlezza, Assistant Artistic Director, Tracy Pattison, Jill Forster and Sabatino A. Verlezza. Where: The Performing Arts Center Tri-C Eastern Campus 4250 Richmond Rd. Highland Hills, OH 44122 For directions click here

Tickets: Adults: $18 ♦ Students & Seniors: $10 Call 216.314.0900 for reservations and information

The concert will feature “new” choreographic ventures, “old” repertory favorites and a concert form of excerpts from the company’s wintertime tradition Snow Tails.  The company holds the unique distinction of having three members of one family contributing to its choreographic voice with the fourth member as a performer. Additionally, the faculty will contribute original “new” and “old” works for the students of the School of Verlezza Dance as well as the senior adults from the Euclid Adult Activities Center through the Cuyahoga County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

The concert will include:

Songs for the Jaguar (1988) is Sabatino Verlezza’s visually rich interpretation of Aztec and Mayan patterns and traditions set to the exquisite score of Missa Criolla. Created for the original Verlezza Dance company in New York, the piece returns to company repertory after 20 years of being restaged for schools and universities in the USA.

Lunar Leap (2006) Barbara Allegra Verlezza’s  “…most inventive…” abstract work for seven dancers and physio-balls, which was cited as one of The Plain Dealer’s Terpsichorean Highlights of 2006, returns in  “sculptural and kinetic motion…[which] never resorts to gimmickry.” Donald Rosenberg, The Plain Dealer. The dancers meld with their props to evoke images of earth, moon, and stars. Originally created on students of Kent State University, the work has been restaged for Verlezza Dance.

Broken Voices (2008) by Barbara Allegra Verlezza, performed by the thirteen women of the Kent Dance Ensemble under the Artistic Direction of Kimberly Karpanty, is an exploration of “the relentless inner dialogue” that plagues one during times of heartbreak and sorrow.  The haunting text by Leonard Cohen provides the musical backdrop for the work inspiring suggestions of dark metaphors, the external investigation of individual suffering versus collective grief, and the internal pursuit to quiet the “broken voices.”

Between the Two (Premiere), choreographed by Sabatino A. Verlezza, is a contemporary exploration of the conflicting ends of the spectrum of life.  The absence of a middle ground leads the quartet on a journey though emotional, physical, and social extremes.

Snow Tails (2005) returns as a suite of excerpts from the original story ballet created for the School of Verlezza Dance by Sabatino Verlezza and Tracy Pattison in 2005.  New works will be included in the suite of student offerings, representing the future dancers of Verlezza Dance. Much beloved music, including “The Nutcracker” and other holiday time favorites, will be appreciated.
